PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA ADDRESS TO THE NATION

President Cyril Ramaphosa has on Thursday, 9 April 2020 addressed the nation on the continuing efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The President’s address followed a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council held on 8 April 2020 and consultations that the President have held with various social partners.

MEC MANOPOLE URGE COMMUNITIES NOT TO PANIC, DESPITE THE INCREASE OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED CASES TO 13 IN THE NORTHERN CAPE PROVINCE

Following yesterday’s announcement by the Minister of Health regarding the increase of COVID-19 confirmed cases to 1845 in the country, the Northern Cape MEC for Health, Ms Mase Manopole, once more wishes to allay fears of community members not to panic and urges them to adhere to restrictions imposed during the lockdown period. These drastic steps, if we all adhere to them, will definitely bear fruit by disrupting transmission and flattening the curve.

MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER OF THE NORTHERN CAPE, DR ZAMANI SAUL ON PROGRESS BY THE PROVINCIAL COVID19 COMMAND COUNCIL

The Northern Cape Provincial Government has spent the past week assessing readiness in terms of the lockdown implementation plan as we observed the first week of the countrywide lockdown. Various Members of the Executive Council have visited communities to assess compliance with the lockdown protocols and that especially grant payments run in an efficient manner with adherence to social distancing and practising safe hygiene.

ZFM Environmental Health on Covid-19

Environmental health services (EHS) is a function of District and Metropolitan Municipalities in South Africa in terms of Section 32 (1) of the National Health Act 2003 (Act 61 of 2003), as amended and stipulates that “Every Metropolitan and District Municipality must ensure that appropriate municipal health services are effectively and equitably provided in their respective areas.”

The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality provides Environmental Health Services in the District and a part of their functions include the surveillance and prevention of communicable diseases, general hygiene monitoring, health surveillance of premises, disposal of the dead and water quality management.

The Environmental Health Unit at the ZF Mgcawu District has been actively involved in awareness campaigns specifically targeted at Covid-19 awareness and training of all stakeholders involved in the fight to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The following activities have taken place thus far:

ª      Training for Funeral Undertakers on the proper handling of deceased persons

ª      Environmental Health received training from NDOH on Contact Tracing

ª      Evaluating quarantine facilities across the District

ª      Water samples taken at identified locations to monitor water quality

ª      Distribution of pamphlets on physical distancing in public areas/ clinics and waiting areas

ª      Assessment of Taxi Ranks in various Municipal areas

ª      Evaluation of Homeless facilities (shelters)
