The Northern Cape has been chosen to host the national celebrations of this year’s (2019) Heritage Day. The celebrations, which were led by President, Cyril Ramaphosa took place at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium. The President was joined by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture, Nocawe Mafu, Deputy Minister of International Relations, Alvin Botes and a delegation.

The Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul arrived with the Executive Council of the Province and joined by the ZF Mgcawu District Executive Mayor, Cllr Roy Olyn and the Dawid Kruiper Executive Mayor, Cllr Michael Segede. The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages. Twenty-five years after South Africa’s transition to democracy, the Bill of Rights in the Constitution guarantees freedom of linguistic, cultural and religious association as part of promoting and maintaining social solidarity and cohesion.

The day kicked off with the Official Presidential Opening of the new library in Upington. The library, situated between the Upington CBD, Rosedale, Dakota Weg and Paballelo has been named the Sandile Present Community Library. Ouma Katrina Esau, commonly known as Ouma Geelmeid held a President’s Reading Circle shortly after the Official Opening of the library. Scholars read for the President in different languages, including the N/uu language.

In his speech, the President has said that he was very honoured to be afforded the opportunity of sitting with Ouma Katrina Esau and learn about the N/uu language and history. The President encouraged each and every South African to go to the libraries and read books in the indigenous languages and learn about one another’s culture. The Executive Mayor of ZF Mgcawu District, Cllr Roy Olyn closed the programme by putting emphasis on the importance of learning and preserving indigenous languages and cultures.
